My wife and I bought a motor home out of Texas in 2006 from a very reputable dealer there. We had a complete inspection done before buying it, from an independent facility that gave it a clean bill of health.

I have bought numerous vehicles from the U.S. over the past fifteen years and have never had a problem, but I usually flip them within three to six months after getting them back here. However, I had been insuring them on my personal insurance and didn’t realize that this would not cover vehicles that were intending to be resold. Thank you for that info. I will look into purchasing a dealer plate.

I bought my last vehicle from Seattle. It was a darling little 2003 Honda CRV with only 15,000 miles on it. When I got it back to Canada and had the out of province inspection done, I found out from the Mechanic that the vehicle looked like it had been in a serious accident and might have been a write-off and repaired.

We bought a 3 month old Hummer H3 from a person in Salt Lake City, Utah for about $10,000.00 less than it would have cost in Canada. The vehicle only had 5,000.00 miles on it and came with full warranty. Before I went down there, I called both the RIV and Canada Customs to find out if there was anything else that I needed to know about before doing this. There was nothing to worry about and so I flew down with a buddy and drove it back. When I got to the border, I was unhappily surprised to find out that I had to pay an EXCISE TAX of about $3,000.00 because it was not considered a fuel efficient vehicle, even though it only had a five cylinder motor.

I purchased a Porsche Cayenne from Stevinson Imports in Denver, Colorado and I saved myself about $10,000.00 from buying the vehicle in Canada. I actually bought it sight unseen and had it shipped by truck to Great Falls, Montana for about $750.00. The vehicle arrived just as described and viewed by pictures.

We purchased a large, luxury motor home with some friends for about $95,000.00 and flew down together, had a little holiday and then came back together. When we arrived at Canadian Customs, we told the agent there how much we paid for the RV. They didn’t believe us and thought we were trying to pull some sort of a fast one on them, because it was a very nice unit. We went in and paid the GST and RIV costs and thought all was OK, but then they made us pull into the search bay and ordered us out of the RV, which was a bit of a problems, because we also had two dogs and two cats with us.

I bought a Kit Car on a 1971 Volkswagen Chassis about two years ago. It is still in the U.S. because I can’t import it into Canada.

I bought a Honda Element from Texas two years ago from the original owner. I flew down with my son and we drove it back together. I did not have any problems anywhere along the way and still have the vehicle today. I would do it again if I could ever find the time to get away from my busy schedule.

My wife and I bought a 2007 BMW 5 series from Los Angeles last year. What an absolutely horrible experience, simply because we didn’t actually know what we were doing.
